  • Recycling company builds on best-of-breed financials system to develop ‘ERP for scrap metal processing’
  • NIIT adopts CODA standards for bespoke development of EMR’s ‘recycling’ applications
CODA Group (AIM: CSY), today announced that the offshore software development specialist NIIT Limited, based in New Delhi, India, is using CODA standards for user interfaces to develop a bespoke system for joint customer European Metal Recycling Ltd (EMR). CODA, the corporate performance management (CPM) and accounting software specialist stated that the new system will manage the recycling of scrap metals and will interface with EMR’s recently implemented CODA-Financials accounting system.

“By adopting CODA’s user interface and standards for the bespoke system we can provide our end users with a completely standard look and feel,” said Peter Armer, Director of Finance and IT at EMR. “We feel this is important for reducing training and support issues, not just the aesthetic appeal of everything looking the same. It means that end users switching between finance applications and business applications can find common fields and information easier, spend less time learning how to enter data and manipulate information on screen, and get better results from the system. It also means that the IT department has one less set of things to manage which reduces the complexity of supporting our systems.”

CODA and NIIT worked in close cooperation to adapt the user interface and other development standards for EMR’s bespoke system requirements. Tim Tribe, head of Product Management at CODA said: “We were very pleased to be able to work with NIIT. Offshore development of bespoke systems like EMR’s is something that we will see more and more often, and I’m delighted that EMR liked the look and feel, the ease of use, inter-operability and the adaptability of CODA-Financials enough to choose our development standards as part of the design for the bespoke part of the system.”

The openness of CODA-Financials is crucial to integrating the new EMR system. CODA’s extensive compliance with industry standards and industry standard APIs (application programming interfaces) makes its software very attractive as the financial engine behind a bespoke solution, such as EMR’s.

David West, Vice President of Technologies at NIIT said, “CODA-Financials is an excellently engineered system, designed for integration with front-office and production management applications. The user interface is very easy to use and the whole system is easy to work with. We are very happy to use it as the template for EMR’s recycling application and we believe that it will provide an excellent financial management engine for the completed system.”

About EMR
One of the world's largest recycling companies - and the largest in the UK - European Metal Recycling was formed in 1994 by Manchester-based Sheppard Group acquiring Coopers Holdings, est. 1871. At the time these companies were the UK's market leaders.

Since then EMR has made a number of acquisitions, most notably buying Mayer Parry Recycling in 2000 and acquiring Swiss-based Newco Metal Recycling in 2001. In addition, it has achieved sustained organic growth.

Today EMR stands at the forefront of the recycling industry. It handles over eight and a half million tonnes of scrap metal a year at 65 sites, predominantly in the UK, and has liaison offices all around the world.

With unparalleled logistics, investment and expertise, EMR leads the way in the processing and merchanting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It has major strengths in the shredding of post-consumer durables, the collection and processing of industrial arisings, the shearing of demolition scrap and the high-tech granulation and dense media separation of mixed materials.

Supporting its core business are specialist divisions serving the private and public sector, a shipping agency and brokerage and a multi-disciplined environmental consultancy.
